There is an excellent visitor's centre at Tarutao, where you can read about its colourful history, as a rocky island prison, and a refuge for vicious pirates who attacked the merchant ships on their way to and from the pivotal trading post of Penang. The plant and animal life is also worth noting, both on the land and under the sea.
